Cigu Saltern is located in Cigu Country and Jiang Jun Country in Tainan County, south to Jiang Jun River, north to Xia Shan River, and west to Tai 17th Road, with a total area of more than 2700 hectares. The field was established by Salt Company in Taiwan, Southern Japan Salt Company and Head Factory of Taiwan Salt Industry in 1935, 1938 and 1971. Sabkha crystallized pools are all of “earth tray formation”. It is one of the most important provider of industrial salt in Taiwan.

As the only saltern invested and developed by a salt company to execute a government economic policy, Cigu saltern is also the largest and youngest in the history of salt industry in Taiwan. A brief history is given as followed.

Tai Qu Saltern
Located in the west and north of Yan Cheng Village in Cigu Country, this field was invested and established by Salt Company in Taiwan in December, 1935, and completed in April, 1938. Measuring 956 acres (398 Taiwanese “jias”), the field stopped salt production in May, 2002, and its property right was transferred to the government.

Nan Yan Saltern
Located in Zhong Liao, Ding Shan in Cigu and Kou Liao in Jiang Jun, it was invested and established by Southern Japan Salt Company in June, 1938, and completed in 1942. Measuring 4058 acres (1691 Taiwanesse “jias”), the saltern stopped salt production in May, 2002, and its property right was transferred to the government.

Fan-shaped Saltern
Located on the north of Tai Yan Saltern and the south of Jiang Jun fish harbor, and the west of Tai 61st Road. It is the only saltern which was developed by Taiwanese after 1945, which was invested and built by Head Factory of Taiwan Salt Industry in January, 1977, completed in June, 1977, and completed land registration and allotment in August, 1984. Measuring 716 hectares, 126 of them were provided to TainanCounty government to build Jiang Jun fish harbor. After the shutdown in May, 2002, its property right was transferred to the government.
